Success and Failure

I intended this week to writing something specific to cycling. This morning, I received an email with a link to this video and I realized that I had to deliver a different message this week.

Throughout my life (and I'm guessing many of you), we've experienced success and failure. Success is great. It validates the fruits of our labor, it keeps us motivated to push forward for more. Failure, on the other hand, is a different beast.

According to the dictionary, failure is defined as:

  1. lack of success.
  2. the omission of expected or required action.
  3. the action or state of not functioning.
In each case, there is something lacking or missing. And, much in the same way, we fail in our endeavors because something is missing. It is how we react and what we do subsequent to that moment that defines us.

I've always told myself I cannot fail, I can only learn and grow. Why? Because in that moment, if I don't achieve my desired outcome, I evaluate what was missing, I learn from my mistake and I do what I can to ensure I don't make it again.

Each of us defines our own success and failure. Don't let anyone else define it for you. But don't let yourself get caught into a vicious cycle where negativity and defeat reigns.

Success or failure will never be about luck or about what cards you are dealt. Success or failure is about the actions you intentionally put out. Your actions, or lack thereof, will be the main thing that seals your fate!

Are you doing what needs to be done to be a success or a failure?
